This is a quilt that elicits lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ and yet it’s incredibly quick and easy to make. The inspiration came from a photo I saw about ten years ago in a magazine, of a strikingly simple, yet stunningly effective silk quilt. It was casually but elegantly thrown on a simple camp bed and was made up of large squares of brightly coloured silks with contrasting thick handstitching. This was in the days before I began quilting, and I looked and looked at this quilt as if to convince myself that, yes, of course I could make one. Eventually, after about three or four years, I took myself off to the fabric shops of Berwick Street in London’s Soho to look for some vivid silk dupion and had a lovely time choosing all my favourite bright colours (gold, garnet, violet, lime, cerise, plus a silvery grey) and making my quilt.

Over the years, I’ve often thought about making another silk quilt. Then, one day, after seeing some particularly beautiful silk fabrics, I fell to musing about all the gorgeous dresses that can be made out of plain, shot and embroidered silks: prom dresses, wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, cocktail dresses and, of course, ball gowns – and felt newly inspired.

First I toyed with the idea of an ivory/ pastel embroidered and beaded creation. However, I decided that although this would be very lovely, it would probably be too pale for my taste (plus beaded silks are prohibitively expensive). So then I went back to my passion for colour, and decided to use fabrics that could be used in the ball gown of my dreams, the kind of garment that would be waiting for Cinderella when her Fairy Godmother announces that ‘You shall go to the ball’, the kind of fantasy dress I might secretly wish was hanging in my wardrobe just waiting for the invitation to the ball to arrive. And this is how my Ball Gown quilt came about.
